I had a good mind to make him wait the whole time while the turnovers baked but I took pity on the cook’s distressed face. It never paid to upset a cook, not unless you wished for more than burnt and crispy offerings for the foreseeable future. Zorren gestured for me to precede him and I didn’t know how I felt having him at my back after deliberately antagonizing him. My hands itched to reach back and shield my vulnerable bottom and for good reason. As soon as we were out of sight of the kitchen he delivered a smoldering swat to the seat of my trews. How dare he, I gritted my teeth more than willing to bare my claws.
“Not one word,” he seethed under his breath when I opened my mouth to reprimand him. “Not one. Single. Word. Or so help the deities, I will blister your bottom right here.” Patience at an end he cupped my elbow and began to steer me. “There was a sturdy wooden spoon back there that looked to be capable of giving your serene highness a lesson in manners.”
